TEST INFORMATION
The Following information applies to the City of Aberdeen ONLY
What to do Next
The only legal requirement for becoming a taxi driver is that you have held a full British driving licence for at least one year.
The first step is to complete an application form for a Taxi Driver's Licence. Applications are available from the Taxi Centre at Powis Place or they can be downloaded from http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/ACCI/web/site/Licences/RM/lic_TaxiLicence.asp A fee of £46* is payable with your application. (*Correct at the time of writing)
The licensing department will carry out a check on your suitability as a taxi driver and will pass details to the Taxi Inspector's Office. You then have to take and pass the Taxi Driver's Licence test before a licence can be issued. The Taxi Inspector's Office will write and inform you about the location and time for the test.
Taxi Drivers Licence Test
This test is set by the Taxi Inspector's Office and is designed to prove your knowledge of streets and your driving competence. Whilst the test is quite stringent it is undertaken in a relaxed and informal fashion which will put applicants at ease. The test is split into four separate sections:-
1. Street Knowledge - A test is set where you are given 20 streets and you are required to precisely name the streets at either end of the given street.
2. Places of Interest - A test is set where you are given 20 places of interest and you are required to name their exact locations. Places of interest could include museums, parks, office buildings, schools, hospitals, public houses etc.
3. Routes - A test is set where you are given points of leaving and destinations. You are required to identify and name the different streets, which give the shortest route between the two points.
4. Driving Ability - A taxi inspector accompanies you in your car and gives you a destination. You are required to take the shortest route to the destination and display comfort and safety in your driving.
The first three parts of the test are written papers and you require a 75% pass mark before moving on to the next part. The time for the test is normally one hour but it is not necessary to take each part on the same day. In other words different parts can be taken on different days and one hour can be taken for each part if required. In practice applicants passing the difficult street knowledge part of the test will normally complete parts two and three within an hour.
The driving element of the test in usually taken separately from the written part. The Taxi Inspector is extremely helpful and will advise and assist you with the procedures before, during and after your test.
However it is worth stating that the first part of the test is extremely difficult and requires an in depth knowledge of streets throughout the city. Few people pass this part first time but generally the test becomes easier following the first attempt.
Note that your application and fee allows three attempts at the test. If you fail the test after three attempts you have to submit a fresh application for a Taxi Driver's Licence.
How to StudyTo study for the Taxi Driver's Licence test it is recommended that you purchase a good A - Z map of Aberdeen and go through area by area starting with the city centre and working outwards in a spider web fashion. Whilst the main roads are most often used by the taxi driver the test will include a fair proportion of lesser-known streets and it is important that your study is comprehensive. Self-study can be a tough slog and some taxi companies offer a tuition course to help you pass the test.
Note: In the City of Aberdeen, applicants who request a Private Hire licence MUST sit exactly the same test.
